Past + Present
we believe everyone deserves to live their best, barrier-free life.
Studio Pacifica has worked collaboratively with architects and built environment teams to help create beautifully designed, barrier-free civic, commercial, education, hospitality, medical, and multi-family residential projects since 1993.
Our specialized consulting practice is driven by a belief in universal design – a way of thinking about design that translates into built environments that work for people of all abilities and ages.
Today, Studio Pacifica consults with some of the most highly respected architectural firms (and their notable Pacific Northwest clients). Our firm’s continuously expanding role in public and private development reflects the focus on accessibility put in place by the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990.
Since that time, many built environment firms have experienced how inclusive design can enhance their core concept. As a result, some look to “go beyond” what is required by law. Studio Pacifica can help clients reach one – or both – of those goals. Our accessibility consultants have both architectural expertise and (in some instances) first-hand experience dealing with a world with physical barriers.
Studio Pacifica was founded by Karen L. Braitmayer, FAIA. Today, Karen continues in her role as managing principal. She is also an active volunteer and non-profit board member.
Professional Services
our team brings architectural + first-person expertise to the table.
Thinking about accessibility early in the planning and design process is one of the most effective (and least expensive) ways to create beautiful, highly usable built environments in the civic, commercial, workplace, education, hospitality, medical, and multi-family residential markets. Our services can extend beyond the built environment to signage, wayfinding, and other elements that support welcoming experiences.
Most design firms are certainly familiar with codes and regulations, but few have highly specialized accessibility professionals on staff. Studio Pacifica fills that role, showing how even a small design decision can have a big impact for people across all abilities and ages. We welcome the opportunity to collaborate on creative solutions, while offering insights from members of our team with lived disability experience.
While compliance may come with a checklist, inclusion requires a shift in mindset and approach. Studio Pacifica can help you with code compliance, best practices for inclusion, and beyond.

The Center for Wooden Boats
The Center for Wooden Boats on South Lake Union has a number of sailing programs dedicated to getting people who wouldn’t normally have access to sailing out on the water! Over the years, Studio Pacifica has provided pro bono advice on new gangways, on the Wagner Education Center, and on a number of other “small tweaks” that keep the CWB accessible to people of all abilities and ages. cwb.org
Seize the Oar
Members of the Studio Pacifica team enthusiastically give financial support to this para-rowing team. In the future, Studio Pacifica hopes to provide pro bono services for a new boathouse on Lake Union that will accommodate para-rowing activities. seizetheoar.com

DO-IT Scholars program, University of Washington
DO-IT Scholars helps high school students with disabilities learn about college opportunities – and college students with disabilities learn about careers. For years, Karen Braitmayer has been an active mentor with the program, and staff member Andrea Kovich was a participant (back in her high school days). In recent years, the firm’s annual company donation went to DO-IT. washington.edu/doit
